Where Should I Have My Pet Photo Session?

Choosing a location for your pet photography session is entirely up to you and your furry friend. Your photographer can recommend a variety of locations to fit whatever vibe you’re going for, whether that’s an urban look or a more rustic feel. What you choose depends on what kind of images you want, as well as your dog’s personality.

Here are a few tips for choosing the right location for your pet session!

In your home or elsewhere?

First off, decide whether you want to have a lifestyle session in your home or you want your pet photo session to be on location at a park or other area. On-location sessions can be tons of fun as they give your dog room to explore and run and show off their fun side. Your photographer can suggest a variety of pet-friendly locations that would work for you and your dog.

If, however, your pet is older, quieter or more anxious, you may want to stick to an in-home photo session. Some animals don’t do well in public spaces and are most at ease in their home or their own backyard. You can get amazing images of your pet either way! Just think about where your dog would be most comfortable.

Think about your pet’s personality

Does your dog get tense around other people? Then a city location may not be the best choice for them. Maybe you dog loves water, and a trip to a local pond or lake would be best. If your dog tends to get carsick, avoid choosing a location that’s a long drive away and stick closer to home.

Your pet’s personality and needs should dictate the location of your photo session. Take into consideration both what your dog enjoys and what they dislike or prefer to avoid to determine the right place to capture images of your furry friend.

Determine a style for your images

Talk to your photographer about what kind of photos you’re hoping to get out of your pet session. For example, if you want images at sunset, that will have an effect on where and when your session takes place. If there are specific photos or styles you want to try to capture, it’s best to let your photographer know well beforehand so they can properly plan out your pet photo session.

That’s the best part of working with an experienced professional: they can help you every step of the way. Every session and every client is different and will have different needs and expectations. A professional pet photographer will work hard to meet your expectations as closely as possible and ensure that you get images you absolutely love!

Choose a location you love

Often, both you and your dog will feel more comfortable in a familiar place. Do you have a favorite park or hiking spot? Think about where your dog is happiest and where you both enjoy spending time together. Those are the best places for your pet photo session, not just because you’re comfortable, but because your images will have sentimental meaning as well.

The location you choose doesn’t have to be unique or visually stunning. It can be as simple as your neighborhood walking trail or local park, or even your own backyard. What matters is capturing the relationship you and your dog share and creating photos that you can cherish for years to come.
