A Newborn Family Session In Studio

Newborns are my specialty! Read on about how to prepare and what to expect…

Ok, so yes, I do allow dogs in my studio from time-to-time, obviously. But no, I don’t have doggie outfits for my newborns! This video is a perfect example of how I can accommodate personal preferences though, so if you have a special outfit you want to incorporate, don’t hesitate to talk to me about it!

1)Parents

The first thing I tell all my parents is to wear solid colors without logos or distracting patterns - these pics are all about the baby and the relationship between baby and parents! Most of these photos are also taken as headshots, so mom’s post-preggo pooch isn’t the focus. In addition, no solid white unless everyone is in white! And I almost never suggest that color unless everyone has darker skin tones - otherwise, we risk washing you all out:) Moms: also don’t forget to pack any makeup you may need to touchup - see #4:)

2)Props

Lemme start by saying that I. Have. All. The. Props. And. Outfits. but ….if you have a special animal, blanket or outfit you want to use in your session, feel free to bring it and I’ll use it as time allows! My first priority is to get the timeless newborn photos that won’t be outdated in 20 years and last a lifetime…next is to capture those special gifts or heirlooms from your family! And if you have a special situation with baby (rainbow, fertility journey, etc,) let me know ahead of time so we can create something extra special!

3)Prep

I don’t ask new parents to do anything special before session. If it’s been a while since baby ate when you arrive in studio, I’ll suggest we top them off to keep them happy for a while. Otherwise, just plan on diapers, a pacifier and a bottle if they’re not breastfed. Also, dress baby in something that can be unbuttoned in the front instead of pulled over their head!

4)Dress In Layers

Newborn sessions in studio are WARM….so make sure to dress in layers and be prepared to get hot before the end of the session…which may be three hours long. If you forget your water, we have some available in studio for you!

5)Siblings

Younger sibling photos are taken near the beginning of the session, unless they’re shy and take a while to warm up to me. I always ask that parents either have a designated person to watch the sibling or be ready to take him or her out of the studio once their pictures are done so they can get a breather. Tablets are also great so they can watch movies or such while waiting, but please don’t feed them snacks before photos that create a mess or end up all over their faces:)

That’s it for now….feel free to drop a line with any questions!
